    2017 Scholarship Awards


    PBA awarded $11,850 in scholarship money to well deserving students in the Pasadena area at our June meeting. The Gathering Place was the host for this special luncheon. Thank you for hosting.

    We are proud to recognize all of the recipients for their outstanding academic achievements and contributions to our community. We wish them continued success as they enter this new and exciting chapter of their life.

    Carly Anello was awarded the Isabel Shipley Cunningham Scholarship in honor of Mrs. Isabel Shipley Cunningham, an Annapolis author and former teacher, who spent years writing both of the Pasadena Business Association history books, Between Two Rivers and The Pasadena Peninsula. Nancy Nicklow, Huff Insurance presented this citation as a Platinum sponsor of the Scholarship Fundraiser.

    Dylan Shupe was awarded the Ed Lauer Scholarship in honor of Ed Lauer of Lauer’s Supermarket and Bakery. Ed Lauer was a founding member and first president of the Pasadena Business Association 30 years ago. Keenan Wilkinson, St. John Properties presented this citation as a Platinum Sponsor of the Scholarship Fundraiser.

    Lucy Zhang was awarded the Debi Smigovsky Grim Scholarship in honor of Debi Grim who started the PBA Education Committee and A Child’s Christmas program. Debi passed away recently.

    Morgan Coakley, Alexis Solley and Nathan Ho were also awarded scholarships to college.

    We awarded three 8th grade scholarships to Leanna Brady, Jessica Calvert and Amaya Madarang. We awarded three 5th grade scholarships to Liam Lynch, Maddy Simard and Hailey Tate. Mark your calendars for March 3, 2018 and attend our Scholarship Fundraiser and help us support even more students next year.

    We are holding our annual School Supply Drive again this year. If you can put a box in your business to collect school supplies please let us know and we will provide you with a list of supplies and poster stating it is the PBA School Supply Drive. These school supplies stay in Pasadena and go to schools in the Northeast and Chesapeake Feeder Systems. We get the information from the school guidance counselors of those in need.

    If you would rather make a monetary donation we will shop for whatever the counselors tell us is still needed. You can make checks payable to PBA and mail to PBA, PO Box 861, Pasadena, MD 21123-0861.

    Bess Clark,  relocated her store, Coterie, A Boutique, from Mountain Road to the new shopping center by Earleigh Heights Fire Hall. She has a very unique boutique so stop in and check it out. Senator Bryan Simonaire & Delegate Nic Kipke were in attendance to present a citation and help cut the ribbon. Jerry Nicklow, President of the PBA also presented a citation to Bess. We wish her the best success in her new location and her 4th year in business.

    The PBA Leads Group I and II held a Networking Mixer at Cheshire Crab in May. It was great to see some new faces and mingle. This was a great opportunity for everyone to come together and talk about their business with others in the association. Thanks to Cheshire Crab for hosting the mixer. They always do a great job for the PBA.

    The PBA Education Committee held the annual 5th Grade Straight-A Lunch with 77 students who qualified as of April of this school year. Students from Bodkin, Ft. Smallwood, High Point, Jacobsville, Lake Shore, Pasadena, Riviera Beach, Solley , Sunset Elementary Schools and St. Jane France School were invited to a complimentary lunch at Two Rivers Restaurant with ice cream sandwiches provided by Bruster’s Ice Cream. C. Muhl Bus Service provided transportation for the event. Many thanks to the PBA members who also provided company logo items for goody bags that were given to students along with certificates of recognition.

    Our 8th annual TASTE OF PASADENA was an amazing night! The weather was not on our side but everything else was. I have heard nothing but complements for each vendor’s food offerings and the presentations this year were the best by far. Each and every one of these businesses stepped up and gave us an amazing evening and need to be commended. First and foremost we THANK all of our vendors; they all did an unbelievable job. Angels Food Market; Beefalo Bobs; Bruster’s Ice Cream; Cheshire Crab; Coco Couture; Edible Arrangements Glen Burnie & Hanover; Glory Days Grill; Kurtz’s Beach; Lauer’s Supermarkets; Mutiny Pirate Bar & Island Grille; Pat’s Select Pasadena; Roy Rogers; The Greene Turtle; The Picantillo Restaurant. We did a little something different this year in that we awarded “BEST PRESENTATION” and the winner is “MUTINY PIRATE BAR & ISLAND GRILLE”, congratulations to Rob Wecker and his staff, great Job. All of the attendees received a coupon book upon entering with lots of great deals – so let’s get out there and visit all of these establishments and be sure to Thank them for a job well done.

    Special Thanks also goes to Bonnie Dausch Kurtz, John Mason & the entire staff at Kurtz’s Beach for hosting again this year.     The May General Membership Meeting was hosted by Compass Pointe Golf Course. Senator Bryan Simonaire and Delegate Nic Kipke gave us an overview of the session and some bills to watch for that could affect small businesses. We want to thank Compass Pointe, Senator Simonaire, and Delegate Kipke for their time and commitment to the PBA.
